Apple’s iPhone 3G Becomes Best Selling U.S. Mobile Phone

The iPhone is the top selling handset for consumers and is the highest ranked amongst business customers

The NPD Group reports that in the last financial quarter, the iPhone 3G overtook the Motorola RAZR as the leading purchased handset among adult consumers.

The RAZR held the top spot in US cell phone sales for the previous 12 quarters before being dethroned by Apple’s hot selling iPhone.

A paradigm shift in design from ”fashion to fashionable functionality,” is believed to be the culprit.

The iPhone provides cell phone users with both fashion and tremendous utility via the thousands of applications available from the iPhone Apps Store.

Four of the five top selling mobile phones are equipped with advanced internet and messaging capabilities, a strong selling point for the newcomer iPhone.

Without a doubt, full featured cell phones are in vogue this year.

Top Selling Rank Order for the Last Financial Quarter this Year, as reported by the NPD Group:

  1. Apple iPhone
  2. Motorola RAZR V3
  3. RIM Blackberry Curve
  4. LG Rumor
  5. LG enV2

Other factors that influenced mobile phone sales were that 43% of consumers desired a camera and 36% wanted the ability to send and receive text messages.

A trend toward more full featured mobile phones is evidenced by these additional statistics:

  • Devices with a QWERTY keyboard in the last quarter sold 30% this year vs. 11% last year
  • Bluetooth-enabled devices in the last quarter sold 83% up from 72% last year
  • Music-enabled phones sold 68% vs. 49% last year

In addition, the last quarter this year had seen overall mobile phone sales and revenue drop from a year ago, 15% and 10% respectively.

To further appreciate the scope of Apple’s iPhone momentum, last week it was ranked #1 by J.D. Powers and Associates in customer satisfaction among business wireless smartphone users.

The study found that Apple was able to differentiate itself from the competition by creating a device that delivers impressive functionality in an attractive form that exceeded customer expectations.

In a relatively short period of time, the iPhone has managed to displace mobile handsets from entrenched wireless companies such as Research in Motion, Motorola and LG in consumer sales as well as in business customer satisfaction. One gadget that does the task of multiple devices well, exceeding expectations and shaking the mobile handset industry to the core is impressive. But to have people realize the real value of the iPhone this quickly, that’s just ridiculous.
